I spent my internship for the fall semester at Fort Indiantown Gap, working for the PA National Guard Marketing Battalion for Recruiting and Retention. (Try saying that 5 times fast). I was given plenty of tasks during my time there, gaining valuable experience in a fast-paced office demanding content with any given time-frame. Not only did I flex my designing muscles, I also gained experience working on a team to reach group goals.
My first project was to create this flyer that would be distributed around my own campus! This was a fun first project, and rewarding that I was able to see it in real life as well. I was given the image and told to use their font (Gills San) and the rest was up to me.
My supervisor asked for an old western "Wanted" style poster to distribute to recruiters. The "1827" is not a year, but a goal for their recruiting efforts. They wanted this as a reminder to get that number, but not have it obvious if potential recruits were to see it and not interpret themselves as "just another number". This was a fun task to create old font effects, which was really well received. I received numerous complements for this poster and saw it hung around the office as well.
Though this post card was not the final version that was used (they went with another design), I still really enjoyed the process of researching the guidelines for postcards and other mailers. (Apparently there are a lot of rules for mailing things!) They also asked me not to use photos, so I wasn't given any real assets so this was the best that I could do with what I had!
I was also asked to make a directional sign for a party called "GX Night." I was given all assets (like the honeycomb background and shape pattern) and threw this together. The sign matched the corresponding invitations so guests could identify where they should be going.
My major in Digital Communications has taught me to integrate multiple disciplines into each project. There are always instances of design, user experience, programming, and communication in every project and below will show how much those amounts are utilized. The more filled the bars are, the more that concentration was used in the process of making the project.
