On April 1st, the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Detroit Red Wings in their last game at the Joe Louis arena, by the slimmest of margins. It was an exciting night as strides were made and the rookies had a strong showing. The first three goals of the game came from Matthews, Nylander, and Marner, three of the top Leaf rookies and Matthews added to his goal record with another in the 3rd period. Winning this game put the leafs right next to the Senators in a tie for second place in the Atlantic Division. In this game Mitch had 1 goal and 3 shots in 21 shifts.
The Leafs won their fourth consecutive game with a 4-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on April 3. The crucial two points put them in second place in the division, just one point ahead of the Senators and Bruins. It was definitely a night for the books to say the least. Nylander played against his brother, Alex, in his first NHL game. Both Marner and Nylander scored their 60th point of the season to join Matthews and it's only the second time in history that a team had 3 rookies score 60 points or more in a season. Matthews broke two records all on his own, setting the record for most goals by an American rookie and most points by a Leafs Rookie. In this game, Mitch had 1 assist and 2 shots in 21 shifts
The Leafs failed to clinch a playoff berth with a 4-1 loss to the Washington Capitals on April 4. The top team in the NHL and President's Trophy winner dominated the game in pretty much every aspect. The Washington shutout was spoiled with a goal at 1:08 left in the 3rd period by the one and only Mitch Marner. Marner had a Power Play goal, 2 shots, and 2 penalty minutes in 23 shifts.
