Lager Era Breweries are the most influential types of breweries in American history, with the largest brewers in the United States getting their starts brewing German style lagers. Bube’s Brewery began in the boom of this movement when German immigrant and apprentice brewer Alois Bube moved to America for work and in 1876 bought his own brewery in Mount Joy, PA.
The 1920s are best remembered as the time of prohibition, the illegality of alcohol, but that did not stop Bube’s Brewery. During this time, they maintained a Victorian-styled hotel and a dairy production to keep their business open. They also served alcohol in their bar room located in the hotel. In 1933, prohibition ended and Bube’s got their tavern license back.
Prohibition came to an end and members of the Bube family lived in the building until the 1960s. Throughout their time, they changed almost nothing about the buildings. Because of this, Bube’s is the only of hundreds of “lager era” breweries that stands completely intact in the U.S. today. During the late 1960’s restoration of the brewery began, and continues today. The beauty of Bube’s is in it’s history, which comes to life when you visit and see for yourself.
