Educating and inspiring others is one of my biggest passions. Using my background in design and programming, I helped create and facilitate a Girls Who Code club at Palmyra Area Middle School. I teach young girls (grades 6-8) how to code in a weekly after school program. This experience not only involves programming; but it also gives me practice in all aspects of design and digital communications. From club logos and t-shirts, to learning the business side of working with a nonprofit organization, this club has given me amazing opportunities to use my skills for good. Lebanon Valley College created a video story showcasing our Girls Who Code program (above). I would highly encourage you to check it out!
Start the Conversation is a nonprofit organization that my classmate and I created. We design and create cards to "start the conversation" about mental health. We are here to end the stigma, start the conversation, and help take the first step to helping those affected by mental illness. I came up with the initial concept, coded the entire website, and designed all the cards myself. My classmate wrote the copy for the site and cards. Our project won a first place award at Lebanon Valley College's Inquiry Symposium. Check it out here: http://digicom.lvc.edu/StartTheConversation
I am the president of DigiVal, a club at Lebabon Valley College that explores new and emerging technology. One of our club members worked with a local NICU in highschool to design and produce onesies. When brought to my attention, I thought this would be a great idea for DigiVal. I cordinated, facilated, and helped design and make onesies for the UMPC Harrisburg NICU. When given the opportunity for DigiVal to design for good on such a large scale, it was at first slightly daunting. Designing, printing, and producing hundreds of onesies is not an easy task, and I knew it would require a lot of work from myself and the club members. However, we knew the outcome would be well worth it. This project will be continued into the 2021 school year.
For this project I was tasked with creating a video that shares the story of a veteran's life (above). A group of veterans came into our class and worked with us to create these videos. I had the honor of working with my uncle, who was deployed to Iraq in 2005. This video was used to raise awareness for invisible war wounds such as PTSD. I set up all the shots and did all the editing. After completing all of the videos, we presented them at a ceremony honoring all of the veterans. This project meant a lot to me and I am thankful that I got to honor my uncle in this special way.
For this project I was tasked with creating a newsletter for a nonprofit of my choice. I chose the Caring Cupboard, which is a food panty in my hometown. The Caring Cupboard has a special place in my heart as I volunteer there on a regular basis. Given the text from their website, I had to create a design around the events and mission statement of the pantry. My audience was the volunteers and members of the community who would receive the newsletter. I chose to do a tri-fold to display my information, which really challenged me to use a layout that was appropriate for the small column widths.
As a graphic design intern at Weber Advertising and Marketing, I had the oportunity to create social media posts for the company. These were fun projects that I had total creative freedom of. My only restriction was using the square crop for Instagram. I used the company mascot in both posts to create fun and engaging graphics.
For this project I was tasked with creating logos for two different programs at Trinity High School. The first logo (top) was for a school fundraiser called the Big Green Giveaway. They wanted a logo to represent the giveaway that did not show prizes. I came up with the idea of an opened gift box, and they loved it! The next round of logos (bottom) was for their Great Books Program. For this logo they requested a colliegent crest. I provided them with four different options and let them chose their favorite.
During my internship at Weber Advertising and Marketing, I was tasked with creating window signs for Landis Supermarket based on the week's circular. Although there was not much creative freedom for this project, it was a great opportunity for me to work directly with clients. It was also super cool to see something that I worked on blown up in a store window!
One long term project that I worked on at Weber Advertising and Marketing was resizing and positioning digital ads for Hoober.I was given the company's stock images and text and had to resize and rearrange them to fit different sized ads. This project was more tedious and time consuming than I originally thought. This was my first time working with digital ads and I am glad I now have this experience under my belt! I even saw one of the ads on my own phone one day, which was super cool!
Through Goodville Mutual, I worked with several different insurance companies to create A-Frame signs. First, I had to recreate the company's logo in Illustrator. This was because many of the companies I worked with were small and did not have high quality versions of their logo. Next, I created the flat mockup of the signage. Lastly, I then used Photoshop to create the 3D mockup of the A-Frame. I personally delivered many of these signs to Goodville Mutual, which was great to see the project from design through production.
As president of DigiVal (club at Lebanon Valley College), I am responsible for planning and advertising all of our events across campus. Above are two sample posters that I created to promote DigiVal events this past school year. Our club has a brand guide (created by past presidents), so I worked under font and color restrictions. We had a great turnout for events last year, and I'd like to partially attribute that to my advertising efforts.
This flyer for St. Pauls Church was my first project on my first day working at Weber Advertising and Marketing. Other than the given text, I had no limitations on design. They wanted to see what I could do with total freedom. The art director was very pleased with the finished result. I loved having creative freedom over this project, and knowing it was for a good cause made it even better!
For this project I was tasked with creating branding for a zoo of my choice. I chose the Philadelphia Zoo and branded my logo and promotional items around Philly being the city of brotherly love. I first started out by creating the logo. I included a heart to stick with the love branding. For all of the animals throughout my branding, I used similar stylization techniques to keep the branding consistent. I created flyers for a day time event and a nighttime event at the zoo. Lastly, I created branded items such as baseball hats and t-shirts.
For this project I was asked by one of my neighbors to create a first annual block party flyer. She described that she wanted the flyers to use playful colors that represent the brightness of summer. The informational text was provided, so I had to create a quirky and unique layout to fit all of the text. After proposing several different graphics for the top of flyer to the client, we decided that the group of houses best reflected the togetherness and community that the block party aimed to create.
My friend is a music producer and was looking to create a logo for his company. He wanted something unique and "trippy" to reflect his music style. After many rounds of back and forth, the above logo is the one he chose. I personally love this design because it sublty incorportes a K form and a koi fish, if you look close! He didn't want anything obviously related to a koi fish, but for branding purposes, I am glad he went with this abstract version!
For this project, I was tasked with creating two illustrations based on the idea of discovering a new species of animal, plant, or fish. The two illustrations had to be consistent in terms of style and approach. Turtles are my favorite animal and I am obsessed with plants and succulents, so I combined them! I drew the outlines of them both with calligraphy markers, scanned them onto my computer, then did watercolor washes, scanned them into my computer, and combined them in Photoshop.
I created this illustration of my boyfriend's car for our 7 year anniversary. I created it by using pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. This project took me a very long time to complete, but I couldn't be happier with the outcome! I am looking forward to doing more illustrations in the future, as this was one of my firsts.
I created this portrait of my best friend and I during my free time. This was my first time doing digital portraits, or any illustration. With that being said, I am super proud of this piece! I am looking forward to continuing to practice and improve my skills. I love learning new things, and I am glad to have illustration under my belt. I created this entirely with the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator on my PC. I am hoping to try a tablet and pen in the near future!
While scrolling on Twitter, I noticed that a singer that I follow was looking for a cartoon style logo for his new cooking "show" on InstagramTV. His post included an extremely rough (stick figure) sketch of what he wanted the logo to look like. He wanted a cartoon version of himself holding a skillet, with the fire emoji below him. He also wanted "Cooking with Austin" in a "cool" text, and mentioned he would like to incorportate the color purple. My design hits all these requirements, and it was a fun challenge to bring his vision to life!
For this project I was a part of a group in which we were assigned to create and market a new kitchen gadget. We came up with MonoHilt, a foldable, easy to store knife with interchangeable blades. It elimates the need to have multiple knives for different types of cutting, therefore reducing storage space. My role in this project was creating a website template that would function for both web and mobile. All the images and text used are placeholders, as this was mreely a prototype design focused on functionality. You can see the whole project (including the website) by clicking on the image above, or just check out the site here: http://digicom.lvc.edu/Monohilt/Prototyping/Mobile.html
This project was to redesign a "bad" restaurant website. Unfortunately, I did this project my freshmen year, and the restaurant has since gone out of business. Therefore, the website has been taken down and there is no way to show you the before. However, take my word that this site is a huge improvement from the original, which was barely functional. As this was completed almost 4 years ago, there are of course somethings I would change now. However, I think it site is a good example of how much my skills have improved. This was our first site that we had to make fully responsive for web and mobile, and this portfolio is my most recent. You can see the restaurant site in action by clicking on the image above, or using the following link. http://digicom.lvc.edu/KaylaShuman/Hometown%20Website/index.html
This project was particularly unique because the site was created using a database. We were given a category (mine was technology) and had to create a site to sell a product within that category. All of the information was stored in a database, and we had to design our site around the data brought in by a repeater. Working with a database system was a completely new expereience, and I am glad I have it in my tool belt. In the future, I would love to learn more about databases, as this was the only project that incorportated it. You can see wireframes of my database driven site by clicking on the above image.
Ease is an app idea that I came up with in a prototyping class. There is a physical pill box that links to the app and tracks medications. The app notifies paitents when to take medicine, and notifies caregivers if a dose is missed. The goal is that by having a noification system for both the paitent and the caregiver, that less doses will be missed. This app specifically targets those with Alzheimer's and memory loss. It gives loved ones ease of mind that the paitent is safe and healthy, which is where the name Ease came from. You can view the project and rough app prototype by clicking on the above image.
For this assignment we were given a flawed design (mine was a Delta Boarding Pass) and were told to redesign it using key design principles. Keep in mind, this project was done prior to airlines having their own apps. I redesigned the layout of the physical boarding pass to make it more user friendly, and also came up with a mobile boarding pass. If you look at this project, you will see my understanding of design principles and how I apply them to both physical and mobile forms.
As part of a group project, we created the app Lecture.ly to solve a series of problems that students face when note taking during lectures. Lecture.ly solves these problems by converting speech-to-text in real time, ensuring that students get detailed notes even with the fastest speaking or quietest professors. In addition to Lecture.ly’s speech-to-text function, users can access premium features that convert lecture notes into Powerpoints, Flashcards, or other forms of lecture material. All notes and lecture materials can be saved for future reference and can be shared with classmates in the case of absences. You can review our entire business plan by clicking on the above image, or refer to pages 9-12 for app wireframes.
This was a super fun and unique project that I had the opportunity to work on during my Prototyping class at Lebanon Valley College. I was tasked with creating a toy or game for ages 3-5. I decided to create a my first matching game, where you lift off the pieces to reveal matches on the game board. All pieces are larger than the preventative choking regulations. The game board is interchangeable and would be sold in themed packs. After coming up with the initial idea, I created a 3D model, and eventually made a high fidelity prototype of the product. My younger cousins love playing it at family gatherings!
For this project I was tasked with creating a how-to pamphlet for anything of my choice. I chose to do a how-to draw pamphlet. My target audience was children, so I made the design simple and easy to follow. I drew each of the steps myself and scanned them into illustrator to do the colorization. After scanning the images in, I worked with different layouts to get all of the elements to fit properly on each page when printed and folded into a booklet. Overall, this was a fun project and I enjoyed getting to work with a printed product.
This short, promotional motion graphic was the first time I used Adobe After Effects. I taught myself how to use it over the summer, before taking a motion graphics course in the fall. I love learning new things, and motion graphics truly has been one of my favorite new skills I learned at Lebanon Valley College. We worked with kintetic typography, title screens, and show reels throughout the semester. I am now confident in my motion graphic skills and look forward to using them in the future!
For this project I was tasked with creating a self portrait using photoshop. I chose to use a picture of me playing my favorite sport, which is soccer. I decided to do a sports portrait to push myself out of my comfort zone. I was already familiar with Photoshop, so I wanted to try effects and techniques that I have not used before. After using many layers and clipping masks, I created this portrait that I am very proud of. In addition to having to use a certain number of layers and effects, we also had to use a scanned element. Therefore, I drew the word goal and scanned it into photoshop. After digitalizing it and adding effects to it, the scanned image fits right in.
This was a super fun and unique project that I had the opportunity to work on during my internship at Weber Advertising and Marketing. A client was looking for flashy bike jerseys with his company name on it for an upcoming race. Unfortunately, I did not get to finish all eight proposals before the pandemic. However, the client happily picked one of the options I already completed. This was my first time working with any type of clothing design, and I would love to do more in the future.
I am an aspiring Graphic Designer; currently attending Lebanon Valley College. I will graduate in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Digital Communications with a concentration in design. Digital Communications is a unique major that combines business, communications, computer & data science, design, and user experience to be involved in hands-on projects that will prepare me for the workforce. After obtaining my degree, I will be a well rounded designer with experience in many areas.
